Canal and River Trust Headquarters

The Periscope - with the current climate crisis and an unpredictable future ahead the necessity to embrace and cultivate alternative forms of green and renewable energy is imperative. Here, the new Canal and RIver Trust Headquarters acts a public water tower for Newark-on-Trent and educates locals and tourists alike on hydrological processes and the importance of water management. The building houses space for the working charity alongside a public museum which celebrates the towns boating heritage. The site is home to 3 ancient Willows which the building pays homage to with its structural timber tree-like columns respecting the history of the place. The environment and building engage in a dualistic dialogue, the roof greenhouse harvests rainwater and channels it through the landscape to irrigate the planting. The water flow is controlled and collected in the buildings underground water tank where the grey water will be recycled through the buildings plumbing system to ensure sustainability for an unknown future.
